RCMP in Manitoba says 15 people have been killed in a collision on a highway near the town of Carberry, with 10 left injured.

RCMP held a press conference Thursday afternoon detailing the collision, which occurred on Highway 1 and Highway 5 between a multi-passenger bus and a semi-truck.

The bus was carrying approximately 25 people, and the majority of the passengers were seniors.

Both the driver of the truck and the bus are being treated in hospital, Mounties told reporters.

The collision occurred at 11:40 am, and RCMP says those that were left injured were taken to hospital with “various injuries.”

“This is a day in Manitoba and across Canada that will be remembered as one of tragedy and incredible sadness,” said Rob Hill, commanding officer of the Manitoba RCMP.

Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson also issued a statement on the incident, saying that “our hearts are broken” while also thanking the first responders and healthcare workers involved in the tragedy.

She added that the flags at the Manitoba Legislative Building have been lowered to half-mast “out of respect for those we have tragically lost.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also issued a statement, calling the news coming out of Carberry “incredibly tragic,” adding that Canadians are here for those who have been affected by the incident.
