Despite the excitement of a big Lotto Max win, one Canadian lottery player managed to keep the life-changing news to himself.
Jose Peneda is a demolition worker who lives in Toronto, Ont. For years, the father of two has been playing various lottery games, including Lotto Max, Lotto 6/49, Ontario 49, and Lottario. Peneda said he plays the lottery twice a week and prefers to choose his own numbers. One day, his selection would prove lucky.
“I bought this ticket as part of my weekly ritual,” he shared. “The next day, after work, I went to the store to check all the tickets I had.”
When he checked his ticket, he was shocked by the numbers on the screen: he had won a $1-million Maxmillions prize in the April 29 Lotto Max draw.
“After confirming my win, I put my hands on my head in a state of shock and awe,” recalled Peneda. “So many things were racing through my mind; I was happy and excited, but also wanted to keep quiet.”

He kept the news a secret and even claimed his winnings at the prize centre in Toronto without spilling the beans to anyone else.
“I’m planning to surprise my family later today,” he said with a grin. “When everyone’s home together, I’ll make the announcement.”
With $1 million in the bank, Peneda said he’ll be investing for his retirement and looks forward to annual vacations.
“I feel so grateful to have won,” he said. “This will make a real difference in my retirement.”
The winning ticket was purchased at Mac’s Cigar Store on Dundas Street West in Toronto.
