Canadian found out about big lottery win in a group chat

Years of playing the lottery together have finally paid off for three friends, who are now celebrating a major win.

Playing the lottery began as a tradition for former co-workers Terry Nelson of Battleford and Leslie Deptuch and Linda Benko, both of Saskatoon, Sask.

“We are a group of three that worked together and started buying tickets,” Nelson explained. “We retired and just kept the tradition going… now we buy once a week!”

As per tradition, they bought a ticket for the Daily Grand and Extra, which starts at $3 per play. While checking their ticket, Nelson was surprised to discover that they managed to match all seven digits — 3622056 — in the July 2 Extra draw, winning a prize worth $250,004.

“I texted our group chat when I realized we’d won to show them!” she said.

Deptuch was the last one to learn about the happy news.

“I got a text notification in the group chat, and I didn’t check my phone,” admitted Deptuch. “Linda asked me if I’d looked at the text a few moments later, and I realized maybe we’d won something!”

Benko recalls being more skeptical, stating, “I asked if it was real! I said I’d believe it when I see it.”

While claiming their winnings, the three of them shared what they plan to do with their share.

Deptuch said she’s going to take her time and sit with the winnings for a while before deciding what to do with her money.

Benko stated, “I’m sharing with my grandchildren and finishing my fence!”

As for Nelson, she said she wants to put some of her money towards home repairs, while putting away the rest of it “as a nest egg.”

Benko said, “It’s pretty amazing to win.”

The group purchased the winning Daily Grand and Extra ticket from 29th Street Market at 221 29th St. in Battleford.
