After winning the lottery, one Canadian lottery player was left in disbelief, but her brother also needed some convincing.
Surbhi Kumar is a private chef and mother of one who lives in Kitchener, Ont. She said she has been playing the lottery for a decade and plays Lotto Max, Lotto 6/49, and Lottario, using OLG’s Quick Pick feature. Little did she know that years later, she’d be celebrating her first big win.
“We headed to the grocery store to do our shopping and check my tickets, just like we do every Sunday. It’s our ritual,” explained Kumar.
When she checked her ticket, she couldn’t believe her luck: she had won an Encore prize during the Lotto Max April 8 draw and was now $100,000 richer.
“When I discovered I’d won, my daughter started doing a happy dance in the store,” she recalled. “We were so excited!”
Excited to share the happy news with family, she called her brother.

“I called my brother in Dubai and told him the good news. At first, he just laughed and said, ‘Very funny.’ He thought I was joking with him,” Kumar said with a smile. “I said, ‘You won’t be laughing when you see my name on the news!'”
While at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to claim her winnings, she said it took her a few days to process her win, describing it as “an unbelievable feeling.”
When asked what she plans to do with her windfall, she said her priority is to pay off bills.
“I’m also looking forward to taking my family on a vacation somewhere in Europe,” she said.
The winning ticket was purchased at Real Canadian Superstore on Highland Road West in Kitchener.
