If you won the lottery and were given a choice between gold and cash, which would you choose?

One Canadian found herself having to make that decision after winning the lottery. Stéphanie Adam is a lottery player in her 30s who lives in Mauricie, Que. One day, she stopped at a convenience store and purchased an instant ticket, opting for a $20 La course aux lingots, which gives winners a chance to win a gold bar.

When Adam finally decided to play her ticket, she almost threw it away, thinking that she hadn’t won anything.

“I didn’t realize the number 14 I had was a winning number,” she recalled.

Luckily, before tossing her ticket, something made her pause, and she pulled up the Loto-Québec app to scan it first. To her surprise, she saw a message on the screen: she had won the game’s top prize, which was a one-kilogram gold bar.

As per the game’s rules, she could choose between a gold bar or a lump sum prize of $150,000. Once she came forward to claim her prize, Adam had 10 business days to choose. Instead of the gold bar, she opted for the $150,000 cash prize.

Adam then headed to the Loto-Québec headquarters in Montreal to claim her windfall. While there, she said she was still in disbelief at how close she had been to throwing away a literal gold prize.

“I almost threw the ticket out! Good thing I scratched the little symbols,” she shared.

Adam purchased her lucky ticket at the Proxi Extra Pérade convenience store at 310 Boulevard Lanaudière in Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade
