A Canadian lottery player is celebrating a life-changing win that has pushed his retirement plans ahead of schedule.

Lottery player Pierre Landry lives in Cormier Village, N.B., with his wife. Landry works at a local fish smokehouse and had something big that he was looking forward to: he was just a year away from retirement.

But plans soon changed when he checked his ticket on the morning of New Year’s Eve.

“I was sitting on my chair for five minutes while my wife was sleeping, and finally I had
to wake her,” Landry recalled. “I had the ticket in my hand and was just shaking it, and she
was saying, ‘What? What?

As for the news that he had been too shocked to tell her: he had just won a $1-million Maxmillions prize in the Lotto Max draw that took place on Dec. 30.

While at the Atlantic Lottery headquarters in Moncton, N.B., to pick up his cheque, the brand new millionaire shared some happy news.

“I was working, but not now,” Laundry said. “I had another year to go if I didn’t win, but this feels terrific.”

Despite immediately quitting his job, he said that he and his wife will take their time to decide on what to do with the prize money. They do, however, plan to buy a motorhome to take a leisurely trip across Canada.

Landry also invited over 20 family members to join him for the event.

“I’m so glad they were all here,” he shared. “It feels good, and they all enjoyed it too.”

Landry purchased his winning ticket at Carrefour à Cap-Pelé in Cap-Pelé, N.B. The
retailer will receive a one per cent seller’s prize.
