Imagine going to work not realizing you’re a millionaire — that’s exactly what happened to one Canadian lottery winner who didn’t even know he’d just won a life-changing prize.
Mathieu Gervais is a lottery player in his forties who lives in the Outaouais region in Québec. For the past year, he’s been getting the Double Jeu Max tickets, which include a Lotto Max and a Québec Max on the same ticket, to which he adds Extra. One day, he purchased a Lotto Max ticket at the Canadian Tire Gas+ gas station in Maniwaki.
Several days later, Gervais stopped at a retailer to have his ticket validated, and that’s when he found out that he had won $1 million in the April 29 Québec Max draw.

His aunt, who had been waiting in the car, wondered what was taking so long. When he finally returned, he said he had asked her to touch his arm. Confused, his aunt did as he asked.
“You just touched a millionaire!” he said.
Gervais showed up at the Loto-Québec headquarters to finally claim his $1-million prize.
“I worked two days not knowing I was a millionaire!” he said.
When asked what he planned to do with his winnings, he said he’d buy a house and a pickup truck.
The retailer will receive a one per cent commission of $10,000.
