A group of Montréal factory workers are celebrating a huge lottery win.

The 14 colleagues, who reside in the Lanaudière, Laurentides, Montréal, and Montérégie regions, won $1 million in the March 5 Lotto 6/49 draw. They got together at the end of March to pick up their prize at the Loto-Québec head office.

Mario Maltais created the group 10 years ago. He was with two co-workers and fellow winners, Louis Bourdeau and Jean-Denis Claveau, when he checked the lottery ticket worth $1,000,000 on his phone.

At first, he thought they had only won $1,000. “But in the end, there were too many zeros,” he laughed.

“I stood up in the control room with both arms in the air,” said Bourdeau, who’s the self-proclaimed “new kid on the team.”

“It was euphoric, everyone was happy — it was exceptional, really,” he told Loto-QuĂ©bec.

The amazing news spread quickly to the rest of the group.

Yannick Cambrini was in a shop choosing a ring for his fiancée when he received the call with the news that his group had won the lottery.

“The party started!” said Maltais, described by his co-workers as someone who’s “always there to lend a hand.”

The lucky lottery winners are each taking home $71,432. They plan to do renovations, travel to Europe, and spoil their loved ones.

The winning lottery ticket was bought at the Faubourg Boisbriand IGA Extra grocery store in Boisbriand.

The retailer also gets to share this win, pocketing a one per cent commission of $10,000.
