A nice gesture from a sibling resulted in one Ontario woman winning a major lottery prize.
Richmond Hill resident Hamedah Chan matched the last six of seven Encore numbers in exact order in the May 16 Lotto Max draw to win $100,000.
The homemaker has been a loyal player with the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) for over 15 years. She usually plays once a week, with her go-to games being Lotto Max, Lotto 6/49, and Ontario 49.
Chan uses OLG’s Quick Pick feature to make her selections and always adds Encore to her tickets. That clearly paid off, blessing the mother of three with her first big win.

The mom says she didn’t even buy her winning lottery ticket.
āMy brother had bought two Lotto Max tickets and gave one to me,ā she recounted, while visiting the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to collect her winnings. āAlmost a month later, he asked me if I had checked my ticket yet.ā
Chan explained that she had two tickets to check, so she stopped by the store to have them validated during a grocery run.
“I handed both tickets to the cashier and asked her to check them for me. She validated the first one and gave me $20,” she recalled. “Then she scanned the second one and told me it was a big win! It took me a while to take it in. I was confused, shocked, and excited all at once, but I tried to keep myself calm.ā
When she returned home, Chan shared the amazing news with her husband.
āHe was very happy and grateful,ā she shared with a smile. āLater that day, I called my brother and said, āGuess what? I won!ā He was so surprised and couldnāt believe it.ā
The mom plans to save the lottery windfall for her children’s education. She also wants to use it to pay off bills and share her winnings with family.
āYou see people winning all the time, but when it happens to you, it feels surreal ā like a dream. Iām incredibly grateful for this win,ā she concluded.
Chan bought the winning lottery ticket at Circle K on Humber College Boulevard in Etobicoke.
