Persistence paid off for one Canadian lottery player who just landed his second win after decades of trying his luck.
Donald Sullivan is a retiree from Oakville, Ont., who has been playing the lottery for over three decades. Although there weren’t any big wins, he said he enjoys playing games like Lotario, Lightning Lotto, and, for the past seven years, Poker Lotto.
Sullivan recalled the first time he won Poker Lotto in 2024.
“When I bought my Poker Lotto ticket and hit the Royal Flush, it was beautiful seeing the prize amount. I was shocked and didn’t know how to react,” he said.
On Sept. 20, 2024, he won a Poker Lotto All In jackpot and an instant prize, bringing his total winnings to $99,091.70.
“Winning this prize has been pretty nice!” he shared, while claiming his cheque. “You don’t think it will happen to you until it does.”

But 10 months later, it happened again.
One day, Sullivan stopped at his local retailer to buy a Poker Lotto ticket and couldn’t believe his luck: he had won a $100,000 prize in the July 18 draw.
“That night, I stayed up past midnight and discovered I’d won $100,000 in the nightly draw,” he said.
However, despite the excitement, there was no one to share the news with.
“It was too late to call friends or go to the store to have my ticket validated, so it was just me, my ticket, and a couple of cold beers,” Sullivan shared with a laugh.
That morning, he called two of his friends and shared news of his second win.
“They were shocked and very happy for me,” he stated.

He explained that he used his windfall to settle some financial responsibilities. This time, he’ll be using his money to buy a new car and save for the future.
“I’m retired now, and this prize will be a nice nest egg,” said Sullivan, who added that it’s still hard to believe that he won for the second time.
He added, “You never know when it could happen to you. Some people get holes-in-one — I’ll stick to Poker Lotto!”
The winning ticket was purchased at Circle K on Sixth Line in Oakville.
