IRCC makes big processing time changes for Canadian PR, citizenship applicants

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website has been updated, offering improved tools to check processing times for permanent residence and citizenship applications.

Now, you can track your applications more accurately using your date of application submission instead of getting a more general wait time.

According to the most recent update on the website, which was posted on Oct. 8, 2025, the processing time for a new permanent resident application is 57 days. The IRCC portal suggests it’s updated weekly.

Changes have also been made for folks applying for citizenship.

If you click on the drop-down menu for citizenship, it’ll give you several options, one of which is “citizenship grant.”

Once you click on that, it’ll ask you whether you have already applied or not. If you have applied, you’ll be asked to input the date of your application.

As an example, if you applied in December 2024, you’ll be told the estimated time left and how many people are ahead of you.

If you haven’t already applied, it will show you the current average wait time, which, as of the time of this publication, is 13 months if you apply today.

Factors behind IRCC processing time

The IRCC says processing time for apps is based on the following:

  • How many applications IRCC has in its inventory
  • How many people are being processed
  • How many applications IRCC expects

“Your processing time starts the day we receive your complete application and ends when you take the oath of citizenship, or if you’re under 14, when your citizenship certificate is mailed to you. It may vary depending on how many applications we get or if your application is complex. Your application may be delayed or returned if it’s not complete,” IRCC adds.

Other application types have also been updated to reflect the more detailed view of processing times.

Daily Hive has contacted IRCC for more information on the processing time changes.
