An international student in Canada says she’s struggling after a “devastating” accident left her in a dire financial situation and in need of multiple surgeries.

Binisha Koirala arrived in Canada from Nepal as an international student, excited to begin a new chapter in her life. However, just two months later, the Scarborough, Ont.-based student ended up fighting for her life.

At 8:21 p.m. on Feb. 18, 2024, Koirala found herself in a collision involving two vehicles that left her in critical condition. She was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery, where doctors had to remove 20 per cent of her liver. Her injuries were extensive: fractures in both her legs, a fractured skull, a broken neck, a dislocated hip, and a broken left hand.

In a GoFundMe campaign she created in 2024, Koirala expressed gratitude for surviving the accident. But recovery has been difficult, and she said simple tasks have “become monumental challenges.” She explained that she was unable to walk, cook, or even take a shower without assistance. To add to that, the accident left her struggling to cover basic expenses.

“I lack the means to enroll in rehabilitation, pay rent, or afford proper nourishment,” she wrote. “Every day is a struggle to make ends meet, let alone focus on recovery.”

Since the accident, Koirala has undergone multiple surgeries, including ACL and PCL ligament repair. In a July 24 update, she stated that her insurance company has stopped covering her treatment.

“My case has not been officially declared as catastrophic, but it’s also far from minor. Because of this, my non-catastrophic benefits have run out, and my insurance is no longer covering any treatment costs, including hospital visits,” she shared. “I currently don’t have any funds left to even attend necessary follow-up appointments, which puts my recovery at serious risk.”

As of August 26, Koirala has raised $17,551 of her $27,000 fundraising goal. She said she’s grateful to everyone who has donated to help her rebuild her life.

“I once dreamed of going to college, building a career, and living a normal, happy life. But right now, my only wish is to heal and regain my independence,” she stated. “My mental health is deteriorating, and I can’t fight this battle alone anymore.”

In an August 15 update, she writes, “Please help me to walk again.”
