A Canadian couple say they will be helping their son out with his wedding a little more thanks to a recent $100,000 lottery win.

Mona and Walter Merkley of Grande Prairie, Alta., won the $100,000 on their Lotto 6/49 and Extra ticket.

Walter told Lotto Spot that he scanned the ticket and exclaimed to himself, “Oh my God, I won some money!”

Walter added that his first thought was to go home and tell Mona the good news.

“She was thrilled,” he said, speaking to Lotto Spot. “We have four weddings and a celebration of life this year, so it will help.”

“We want to help out both of our moms, give our son a little extra for the wedding, and put some education savings together for our grandchildren,” he continued. “We also want to take a trip to New Brunswick next year since we haven’t been in a few years!”

He added that winning the $100,000 felt phenomenal and life-changing.

The Merkleys purchased their winning Lotto 6/49 and Extra ticket from Circle K at 9109 92nd Ave. in Grande Prairie. They won their prize by matching the last six digits in the May 2 Extra number: 1965203.
