Charges laid in viral video capturing bear following hikers in Banff National Park

Parks Canada has laid charges after investigating a social media video showing two hikers and their off-leash dog being followed by a grizzly bear in Banff National Park. 

In a statement to Daily Hive, Parks Canada says the encounter occurred on the Taylor Lake Trail on July 19, 2026. 

“Park wardens have identified the individuals involved and laid charges for having an off-leash dog under section five of the National Parks of Canada Domestic Animal Regulations.” 

According to its website, Parks Canada says dogs must be on a leash that is three metres or less at all times. Charges for having an off-leash dog in national parks can reach up to $25,000.

Parks Canada said failing to keep pets leashed in national parks can put both wildlife and pets at risk. Bears and other animals may react aggressively toward dogs they see as threats. 

“Off-leash dogs can also cause wildlife stress, leading to them avoiding important habitat and sources of food. Always keep your pets on leash when visiting national parks.”

The agency reminded visitors that wildlife encounters can happen at any time in Banff National Park. It recommends carrying bear spray, hiking in groups of four or more, making noise on trails, using official marked paths and trails, travelling during daylight hours, and keeping at least 100 metres away from bears, cougars, and wolves.

Earlier this month, a hiker was injured in a grizzly bear attack in Jasper National Park.
