Major Canadian airline reduces extra fee on some bookings

Some bookings with Porter Airlines will be slightly cheaper as the carrier implements a reduction on an extra fee.
Canada’s third-largest airline announced in an email to customers on Tuesday that it has reduced its temporary fuel surcharge on VIPorter reward flight redemptions from $40 to $20 as the fuel market has started to normalize.
In March, the carrier implemented the temporary fuel surcharge to offset global aviation fuel prices that had doubled amid the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait is a crucial passage way for one-fifth of the world’s oil supply, and its shutdown caused oil prices and, therefore, jet fuel costs to spike.

“We also said that our goal was to remove this surcharge when the price of fuel reaches levels seen at the beginning of this year. Today, we are taking a step in this direction,” Porter stated in the email.
According to the airline, fuel prices remain approximately 50 per cent above last year. It said it continues to monitor the situation and will “make further adjustments as conditions change.”
This fee reduction comes after U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Iran had agreed to a deal to end the conflict and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
Besides Porter, Air Transat, Air Canada Vacations, WestJet, and Flair have also added fuel surcharges to certain bookings.
Air Transat was the first Canadian airline to have a firm response to skyrocketing jet fuel prices. The airline’s chief financial officer, Jean-François Pruneau, stated that Air Transat would increase fuel surcharges for Europe during the company’s first-quarter earnings call. He added that this would be blended into the total price of flights.
Air Canada Vacations announced that it would add a $50 fixed fuel surcharge to new vacation packages for sun destinations booked as of April 6 that include a flight.
WestJet announced a temporary fuel surcharge on all bookings made with a companion voucher as of April 8, 2026. This surcharge is reflected in the “other ATC (Air Transportation Charges)” portion of bookings.
