"Suspicious" electrical outlet at Airbnb did not contain hidden camera

A new development has emerged in a story about a Canadian Airbnb rental and an electrical outlet that reportedly contained a hidden camera.

Daily Hive reported on the original story back in March of this year, the source of which was a TikTok video.

In a recent development, it turns out all was maybe not as it seemed, thanks to the findings of the RCMP in Sunshine Coast, where the Airbnb was located.

In case you missed it, according to Kennedy Calwell, she and her friends rented an Airbnb in March to celebrate a friend’s 30th birthday. That celebration turned sour when Calwell and her friend Becca believed they had found a hidden camera in the bathroom pointed toward the shower.

Sunshine Coast RCMP released some findings on Tuesday that tell a completely different story, though they did find the outlets in question peculiar.

“RCMP engaged the assistance of a specialized unit and together it was noted that the outlets did look suspicious.”

Those outlets were sent to a lab for “forensic and functional examination.”

The findings were made on June 30, when after examination of the electrical outlets, it was determined that they did not contain a hidden camera or any storage or recording devices.

RCMP added that the homeowner and Airbnb had been notified of the findings.

In the original TikTok video, Calwell said the discovery was unbelievable.

“We couldn’t believe it at first,” said Calwell, who added that they asked contractor and electrician friends to double-check what they had found. “Once they were confirmed to be cameras, we felt violated and scared as we didn’t know who had the footage or what they were going to do with it.”

In response to a request for comment, an Airbnb Canada spokesperson told Daily Hive it was pleased with the investigation. Airbnb had initially suspended the listing, but that has now been reversed.

“Airbnb is thankful to the Sunshine Coast RCMP for their investigation, and our hope is that the guests are reassured by their findings. Following their investigation, we have also reinstated the Host,” Matt McNama with Airbnb Canada said.

“Our stance remains firm – hidden cameras are prohibited on Airbnb, and issues of that nature on our platform are incredibly rare.”
