A pink-bearded Canadian man who only recently started playing Lotto Max is $15 million richer after matching all seven numbers in a recent draw.
Don Matheson, of Lacombe, Alta., says he only recently started buying lottery tickets before landing the life-changing win in the June 5 draw.
“I just started buying tickets in the last month,” Matheson said. “I figured, what the heck – you can’t win if you don’t buy the ticket!”
He discovered he had won while checking his ticket in a store, where he says the excitement spread.
“I just thought, ‘Gee whiz, now I can really help some people!” he said.
The win comes just before Matheson’s birthday, making it an extra special one for the Lacombe resident.
“I bought the ticket just before my birthday, so this made for one heck of a birthday surprise!” he laughed. “It will be a gift that will keep on giving.”

Matheson already has plans on how he’s going to spend his cool $15 million, including helping with his family members’ mortgages and giving back to his community.
“I won’t change, but I’ll make sure my family members’ mortgages are paid,” he said. Another thing that Matheson says isn’t changing is his unique pink beard, which he says is in support of Pink Shirt Day.
“I promised some kids I would do my part to help stamp out bullying, so this is my ‘pink shirt’ every day,” Matheson said.
“I said I’d take it off when bullying stops,” he added. “It definitely stands out and gets people talking.”
Matheson purchased his winning Lotto Max ticket from a Circle K location at 5001 52nd Ave. in Lacombe.
