The latest Canadian coin features an intricate depiction of woodland wildlife with a unique twist.
The Royal Canadian Mint’s new design, Predator or Prey in Shadow Box, is a must-have for collectors and nature lovers. The silver coin is a shadow box that brings a detailed nocturnal scene to life in 3D. At the forefront is a hare munching on some greenery, but in the background is something more sinister: a lynx in the shadows stalking its prey.
However, a closer look reveals a wolf pack tracking the lynx from the edge of a stream.

“Filled with lush flora and hidden fauna, the shadow box design is composed of superimposed layers of engraving that gently overlap, each casting shadows on the next and obscuring important story details that are only visible when viewed from a certain angle, ultimately revealing that the hunter may actually be the hunted!” reads the website.
The woodland scenery, designed by Canadian artist Julius Csotoyni, uses four layers of overlapping engraving to create the shadow box effect.

The coin is a follow-up to the now sold-out From the R&D Lab: Birds in Shadow Box, released in 2022. The Predator or Prey coin has a face value of $175, and it’s made with 99.99% pure silver. It has a four-inch diameter and is pretty heavy, at 738.92 grams. It also comes with an equally hefty price tag.
The coin retails for a whopping $2,799.95, which you can pay in monthly installments of $466.66 over up to six months. Only 750 of these coins will be available.
