A vacation in the U.S.? No thanks. A six-figure salary? Well, on second thought…
While people leave Canada for various countries around the world, the U.S. remains an obvious option for Canadians looking to make more money or just get a change of scenery.
That may seem surprising to some Canadians right now.
Tensions between Canada and the U.S. remain high, with disagreements over trade and U.S. policy prompting some Canadians to rethink their relationship with their southern neighbour.
Canadians have also been taking fewer trips to the U.S., with travel south of the border falling 23.5 per cent in 2025 as more people opted to vacation at home or travel to overseas destinations, StatsCan says.
But despite the political frustration, boycotts and Canadians saying online that “I would never move to the U.S. even if you paid me,” there are plenty who are still moving down south, whether permanently or just temporarily.
Canada is seeing record levels of emigration, according to StatsCan. In 2025, 120,640 Canadians left the country, and another 30,092 left in the first quarter of 2026 alone — the highest first-quarter total recorded by the agency. And the U.S. is one of the top landing spots.
For some, the chance to make significantly more money may outweigh concerns about living in the U.S. Others may have moved for school, housing, family or simply a different quality of life.
