Canadian couple plans to spend huge Scratch & Win prize on a good cause

Two Canadian retirees from a small B.C. commuter on Vancouver Island won a big lotto prize from a Scratch & Win ticket and are suggesting they’ll put it to good use.

Not until after a little bit of fun, that is.

Kenneth and Michele Babich, who hail from the town of Mill Bay, which has a population of around 7,200, won a $1 million prize from a $10 In The Money Multiplier Scratch & Win ticket, the largest prize available from that game.

“We were at home and I scratched the ticket,” Michele told BCLC. Based on the rules of the game, it was a pretty lucky feat for the couple.

“Then I showed Kenneth after checking [on the BCLC Lotto! App]. He thought it was $50, seeing the 50X.”

Kenneth soon realized it was the $1 million prize and not a measly $50.

“One reason we like to play and what we appreciate about the lottery is all the different ways the community benefits from the money generated from the lotteries,” Kenneth said.

In a release, BCLC stated that when the pair claimed their prize, they hadn’t yet told their kids but planned to do so shortly after. BCLC also asked how it feels to win.

“It will help with our quality of life,” Michelle responded.

“It’s going to help us give back more to the causes we are passionate about.”

The lucky Canadian Scratch & Win winners had already booked a cruise, and they’re now treating it as a celebratory trip.

If you’re reading this from Mill Bay, the ticket was purchased at Thrifty Foods on Mill Bay Road.

So far in 2025, Scratch & Win players in B.C. have redeemed more than $109 million in prize-winning tickets,” BCLC added.
