Canada has a unique white passport and here's how you can get it

Most Canadians are aware of the typical blue passport that the Government of Canada issues, but did you know that, in special situations, it comes in white?
Redditors are sharing the unique colourway of the passport that Canada has available, and many actually prefer it to the usual dark blue.
“Something I’ve never seen before,” one person shared about the white passport on the subreddit Passport Porn recently.

The comments are filled with people sharing their preference for the white and gold passport for Canada.
“We should have white as the regular colour for the passport — the cover design works better on it. Not going to happen, but it would be nice,” reads one comment.
“The true north passport should be white. It’s beautiful and makes the coat of arms stand out so nicely,” added another person.
But how exactly do you get this white passport from Canada?

According to Canada’s FAQ page, these white passports are usually issued by Canadian government offices abroad to “citizens with an urgent and proven need for a passport” or “for use while waiting to receive a regular, special, or diplomatic passport.” So, it’s essentially a temporary passport.
It only has eight pages and is only valid for the length of the individual’s travel, up to a maximum of one year. As pretty as the passport is, the Government of Canada says you can’t extend its use for any reason.
One Redditor shared how their dad was able to get the white version of the photo ID.
“My dad got stuck in Germany with only his German passport. With the new visa rules, he wasn’t allowed to leave Germany without his Canadian passport to come back to Canada. Thus, the Canadian white passport emerged,” reads the post.

Canadians who are issued this travel document must sign a temporary passport exchange agreement outlining their rights, privileges, and duties.
The agreement tells you when you’ll need to exchange the temporary passport for a regular, diplomatic, or special passport.
“The date must be within 60 calendar days of signing the agreement,” reads the government FAQ page.
It also tells you the exchange location, which you can’t change for any reason. For more details on the white passport, check out Canada’s FAQ page.
