If you’re planning to travel within Canada this summer, make sure to add two of the world’s best lakes to your itinerary.
The Telegraph recently listed 10 of the best lakes you must travel to in your lifetime, and two are right here in Canada. Being named among the top in the world is especially impressive considering that millions of lakes exist around the globe, each with its own unique appeal.
Some of the lakes mentioned are so vast they’re shared by at least two countries, like Lake Maggiore, which sits between Italy and Switzerland. According to The Telegraph, Lake Maggiore is at the top of the list because, unlike the glamorous Lake Como, it’s less crowded while still offering stunning views of the Alps.
These are the two Canadian lakes that made the list, and what makes each worth adding to your Canada travel bucket list. And with the Canada Strong Pass set to return this June, it’s the perfect time to explore some of the country’s most beautiful destinations.
9. Maligne Lake, Canada

Maligne Lake is on the list for its “mountain majesty.” The largest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies, Maligne Lake, is located in Jasper National Park in Alberta. And although it’s not as famous as Lake Louise, it’s no less stunning.
According to Parks Canada, it was originally known as “Chaba Imne” (Beaver Lake) by the Indigenous people who lived in Jasper. In 1907, Mary Schaeffer, a wealthy Quaker from Philadelphia, discovered the lake and wrote about her experience exploring the valley and lake, making it a popular attraction.
You can experience the lake in different ways: by hiking along the trails of Maligne Valley, by hopping on a boat tour, or by kayaking towards Spirit Island.
10. Lake Huron, Canada and U.S.

One of the five Great Lakes, Lake Huron in Ontario, is so vast (it’s the fourth largest globally) that it’s shared by both Canada and the U.S. It’s perfect for a day trip or spending several days cruising. And there’s plenty to see.
It’s home to 30,000 islands, nearly 1,000 shipwrecks, sandy dunes, rocky grottos and outcrops, and Flowerpot Island’s flowerpot-shaped rock formation, carved by wind and waves. Lake Huron is also an important habitat for wildlife such as the Canada lynx, river otter, bald eagle, and a variety of bird species.
