Canada updates travel advisory for India over serious security risk

Canada has updated its travel advisory for India and is urging anyone travelling to the country to exercise a high degree of caution.
The Canadian government updated its India travel advisory on Tuesday, Nov. 11, due to safety and security risks.
“Exercise a high degree of caution in India due to the threat of terrorist attacks throughout the country,” reads the update. “Exercise a high degree of caution in and around Bengaluru, Chandigarh, and Mumbai.”
At least 13 people have been killed and 20 injured after a car exploded near a metro station and the Red Fort, a popular tourist attraction in New Delhi, on Monday, Nov. 10, according to Al Jazeera. The blast occurred shortly before 7 p.m. local time and is believed to have originated from a vehicle that stopped at a traffic signal.
As a result, the Government of India has placed several states on high alert, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra. Canadians in the region are urged to avoid popular tourist areas and to be aware of their surroundings. In addition, make sure to monitor local media to stay informed of the evolving situation and follow advice from local authorities.

According to the advisory, the Consulates General of Canada in Bengaluru, Chandigarh, and Mumbai are temporarily suspending in-person operations. Canadians in need of consular assistance and information can contact the High Commission of Canada in New Delhi.
