Canada urges caution in new Philippines travel advisory update

If you’re planning a trip from Canada to the Philippines, make sure to take extra precautions following a new travel advisory update.
The Government of Canada published an update to its travel advisory for the Philippines, warning people of possible safety and security risks. The warning involves a possible terrorism threat, which prompted the U.S. Embassy in Manila to issue a security alert on March 7.
“While there is no specific, credible threat to U.S. Embassy Manila at this time, the potential for demonstrations, anti-U.S./Israeli sentiment, or opportunistic attacks remains elevated,” reads the update.
As a result, the embassy urges everyone to maintain situational awareness.
“Remain alert to your surroundings at all times, especially in public places frequented by foreigners or Americans,” reads the statement. “Avoid facilities such as the Chabad Jewish Center and the Jewish Association of the Philippines.”
Travellers are also warned to stay away from large gatherings, demonstrations, and “areas with heightened security presence.”

Canada also recently issued another travel advisory in the Philippines update due to a possible health risk.
The Feb. 16 notice warned people of the risk of dengue, a virus that can spread to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito.
“Check the page for your destination often, because safety and security conditions may change,” reads the site.
