Canadians living with a disability will receive money from the government today in the form of the Canada Disability Benefit.

Eligible Canadians will receive money from the Canada Disability Benefit program on Thursday, Nov. 20. The federal benefit provides financial support to individuals with disabilities.

This benefit supports working-age Canadians with disabilities aged 18 to 24. The program is administered by Service Canada. The first month of eligibility began in June 2025, but you can still apply online.

To apply for the Canada Disability Benefit, you must meet several eligibility requirements.

Canadians who qualify would have received letters from Service Canada inviting them to submit a Canada Disability Benefit application. The letter includes a unique six-digit code with instructions on how to apply.

If you didn’t get a letter, you can still apply for the benefit.

You can apply for the Canada Disability Benefit if you have a spouse or common-law partner and both of you must have filed your 2024 federal income tax return.

To be eligible, you must be one of the following:

The amount you receive through the Canada Disability Benefit depends on several factors based on your family’s net income.

The maximum amount you can receive in payments from July 2025 to June 2026 is $2,400, or $200 per month. The amount will be adjusted annually for inflation, based on the current cost of living.

You may even be eligible for back payments for previous months — payments can be retroactive up to 24 months from the date your application is received. However, it doesn’t apply to months before June 2025.

You can submit an application online, in person at a Service Canada office, or by phone at 1 (833) 486-3007. However, Service Canada suggests applying online “for a faster application process.”

The information you need to provide depends on whether you’re applying for yourself or on behalf of someone else, or if you received a letter with an application code from Service Canada.

If you received an invitation letter from Service Canada, you’ll need to provide the following:

  • the unique application code, which can be found on the upper right-hand corner of the letter from Service Canada
  • your Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • your legal status in Canada
  • your direct deposit information, which is the most reliable way to receive payments

If you didn’t receive a letter, you’ll need to provide the following:

  • your SIN
  • your mailing address
  • your legal status in Canada
  • your net income (line 23600) from your 2024 notice of assessment (providing this will help speed up your application processing time)
  • your direct deposit information

If you’re planning to start budgeting for next year, the Government of Canada has released its credit and benefit payment dates for 2026.
