Canadians could soon find this brand-new $2 coin in their change

Next time you’re rummaging for change, make sure to take a closer look, as a new $2 coin is now in circulation across Canada.

The new toonie design is now making its way into pockets and purses in Canada after the Royal Canadian Mint issued the commemorative coin. The coin honours The Royal Canadian Legion’s 100-year mission to support veterans, still-serving military and RCMP members, and their families.

The Commemorative Circulation Coin – 100th Anniversary of The Royal Canadian Legion was designed by artist Vlada Pashchenko and features the Legion’s crest surrounded by the motto “Memoriam Eorum Retinebimus (We Will Remember Them).”

A silhouette of a Legion member can be seen kneeling in front of a mother and a child as he hands a child a poppy, a symbol of remembrance. A poppy and maple leaves adorn the border, along with the engravings “1926-2026” to mark the Legion’s centennial anniversary. The other side of the coin features an effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.

According to the Mint, there will be three million of the coins in circulation — one million uncoloured versions and two million coloured versions.

“For a century, The Royal Canadian Legion has played an important role in supporting our nation’s veterans and active military,” stated Simon Kamel, interim president and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. “It is fitting that we are acknowledging the Legion’s steadfast commitment to Remembrance and community service on a new commemorative circulation coin.”

You can now order both versions of the coin on the Mint’s website. Choose from a two-piece Collector Keepsake Card for $14.95 or a box set with two capsuled coins and two rolls for $187.96.

The Mint also recently released a glow-in-the-dark coin for dinosaur enthusiasts.
