Young adults have the highest COVID-19 infection rate in Canada: Tam

Canada’s chief public health officer is warning that COVID-19 cases are on the rise amongst young adults.

In a statement released on March 14, Dr. Theresa Tam said that Canadians aged 20 to 39 now have the highest infection rate across the country.

“Circulation of COVID-19 in younger, more mobile, and socially connected adults can increase the risk of spread into high-risk populations and settings,” Tam said.

“The emergence and spread of certain SARS-CoV-2 virus variants heightens this concern.”

As of March 11, 2,986 virus variants have been reported across the country.

Although virus activity has been levelling off for a few weeks, Tam said officials have now begun to observe an increase in case counts.

She urged Canadians to continue following public health advice and to maintain caution as vaccination programs ramp up nationwide.

“We must all remain vigilant with public health measures and individual precautions to prevent a rapid shift in trajectory of the epidemic,” Tam said.

“The vast majority of Canadians remain susceptible to COVID-19.”

To date, Canada has seen 906,201 COVID-19 cases and 22,434 deaths.
