If the snow and cold weather have you feeling down, boost your mood by checking out these awesome things to do during the winter around Calgary.

All of these seven activities are less than a two-hour drive from Calgary, with many of them being even closer than that. So get ready to bundle up and enjoy these fun, very Albertan winter things to do near the city!

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is an awesome winter sport, and not so intimidating for people who aren’t used to getting outside in the cold weather. But, make no mistake, it will definitely have you working up a sweat! There are so many great places to snowshoe both in and outside of the city. For a list of some of the best spots, check out this blog post here.

Where: There are so many great snowshoeing trails both inside and outside of the city. Some of our top recommendations include the Ann and Sandy Cross Conservation Area or the West Bragg Creek Trails. You can view a full map of the area here.

Kananaskis Nordic Spa

For the ultimate winter relaxation experience, check out the Kananaskis Nordic Spa! The spa opened in 2018 with quite a buzz and has been a favourite place for Calgarians to visit ever since. Get a massage, soak in the pools (both hot and cold), or try one of the barrel saunas.

When: 9 am to 9 pm daily
Where: 1 Centennial Drive, Kananaskis Village

Wolfdogs

If you’re an animal lover and want to support a local organization devoted to their well-being, check out the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary. You can get up close and personal with the wolf dogs and feed them treats while you learn all about this unique species of animal and preservation efforts.

When: Open Thursday to Monday from 10 am to 5 pm
Where: Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary — 263156 Range Road 53, Cochrane

Saskatoon Farm

The Saskatoon Farm has a fantastic restaurant to check out with legendary pies, but it’s famous for its annual Christmas market. Get the chance to try chestnuts right after they have been roasted on an open fire or pick up local goodies (for yourself or gifts). The farm truly transforms into a magical winter wonderland.

When: The Christmas Market will take place during the first two weekends of December

Cross-country skiing is a fantastic winter sport and offers a challenge for both beginners and professionals. A lot will depend on the track you choose. There are some great tracks in Bragg Creek, but for an extensive list of spots, check out this post here. If you’re skiing on a budget, check out the gear rentals available at the University of Calgary, but make sure to book ahead here.

Sleigh rides

For a magical winter experience, try sleigh riding through the Foothills. There are a bunch of places to go on a sleigh ride in the mountains, especially in Banff, but you don’t have to travel that far to experience it for yourself! Anchor D Ranch offers sleigh rides that end with an open firepit! You can bring hot chocolate, hot dogs, or whatever you like, to put on the grill over the fire.

When: 7 am to 8 pm daily
Where: Anchor D Ranch — 450001 312nd Street W, Turner Valley
