Direct flights to London, England from six Canadian cities will be added to WestJet’s itinerary in 2016, for as low as $299.
In a media event, the discount carrier announced that new, non-stop routes to the United Kingdom’s capital city will be introduced for airports in Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto and St. John’s, Newfoundland.
The route running from Calgary International Airport (YYC) to London’s Gatwick Airport will operate 5 times weekly beginning on May 6, 2016. The fares will be extremely low, with fares starting at $299 one-way, including taxes and fees.
“Canadians have been paying far too much to fly to Europe for far too long and today, as we have throughout our history, we’re going to fix that,” said Bob Cummings, WestJet Executive Vice-President, Commercial in a release. “We are offering non-stop flights at very low prices and we’re proud to once again lower airfares and make travel more affordable.”
Passengers departing out of St. John’s, Newfoundland will be able to fly for as low as $199, Toronto from $249, Winnipeg from $279 and Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver from $299. Connecting flights will also begin at only $20 way to connect from select airports into the Canadian airpots with WestJet services to Gatwick.
The new services are made possible by WestJet’s recent acquisition of four new Boeing 767-300 aircraft that allow the airline to expand its offerings to include long-distance flights.
These wide-body planes have a range of approximately 9,500 kilometres or 11 hours and hold a capacity of 262 passengers. In contrast, the existing fleet of Boeing 737-800 aircraft have a range of just 5,667 kilometres and can carry only 174 passengers.
In addition, the airline took the opportunity today to unveil its new teal and blue maple leaf-themed logo, which will be appear on the livery of all aircraft.
From YYC, Air Canada also flies non-stop, daily flights to London Heathrow while Air Transat operates seasonal flights to London Gatwick.
