WestJet eliminating certain Alberta to B.C. flights amid poor economy

WestJet announced on Tuesday they will be eliminating certain flights between Alberta and B.C. amid the economic downturn.

The airline said their service is largely based on supply and demand, and there has been less demand for frequent travel to and from Alberta.

WestJet declined to be interviewed, but said in a statement this isn’t anything unusual.

“We have in the past adjusted service as part of our capacity deployment strategy where many routes are updated to provide the most effective and efficient schedule that meets the needs of our guests. The changes we have made still ensure that our guests have the ability to conveniently connect to the WestJet network,” reads the statement.

The company says they will continue to evaluate the situation an make changes as necessary.

Here are the changed Alberta to B.C. WestJet routes:

Edmonton to Abbotsford

Service from Abbotsford to Edmonton will be reduced as of March 5. Flight WS3125 from Edmonton to Abbotsford and flight WS3124 from Abbotsford to Edmonton both were removed from the schedule. Weekly service to and from Edmonton will fall from 21 flights to 14.

Edmonton to Kamloops

Daily service for this route will be cancelled as of March 5. Two times daily service from Kamloops to Calgary remains.

Edmonton to Nanaimo

Daily service from Nanaimo to Edmonton will be cancelled as of March 5, but twice daily service to Calgary will remain.

Calgary to Penticton

Flights from Penticton to Calgary will be reduced as of February 15. Service will be reduced from twice daily flights to just three days a week of twice-a-day flights. WS3132 from Penticton to Calgary will operate on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday and flight WS3276 from Calgary to Penticton will operate on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. 

Calgary to Prince George

Prince George to Calgary flights will be cancelled as of March 5. Additionally, Prince George to Vancouver flights will be reduced by one flight per day, bringing the total down to four times daily flights.

Calgary to Terrace

Daily flights between Terrace and Calgary will be cancelled as of March 5. Three times daily flights will remain.
