Weegar thanks Calgary Flames fans in emotional goodbye post

Calgary Flames fans have mixed emotions following a blockbuster trade with the Utah Mammoth on Wednesday afternoon.

The Flames surprised many when they sent MacKenzie Weegar to the Mammoth in exchange for Olli Maatta, prospect Jonathan Castagna, and three 2026 second-round picks.

While Flames fans are pleased with the return, it’s been equally tough to see Weegar, a fan favourite, head out the door. The 32-year-old seemed very happy to be in Calgary from the second he was acquired ahead of the 2022-23 season, and was eager to help turn the organization around.

“Saying this goodbye isn’t easy,” Weegar wrote. “As a Canadian boy, wearing the Flaming C was a dream come true.

“This team, the fans, and the community have meant so much to me and my family over the years.  I’m beyond grateful for every teammate who battled beside me and the culture that we built inside that dressing room, every fan who showed up for us, and everyone who made this place feel like home so quickly.”

Though he had struggled in 2025-26, Weegar developed into a true top-pairing defenceman during his time in Calgary. He posted north of 45 points in each of the past two seasons, and scored a career-high 20 goals in 2023-24.

“Giving back to the community is what this game is all about,” Weegar continued. “The hospital visits, school visits, and charity work were so meaningful to me. Thank you for the memories I’ll carry with me forever.”

What Weegar will also be remembered for is helping lead the charge for a new arena. Following the 2022-23 season, he spoke publicly about the city needing a new facility. Just over a year after his comments were made, shovels hit the ground to begin building Scotia Place.

Weegar, always known to have a good sense of humour, made sure to remind Calgarians that he’s taking some responsibility for the soon-to-be home of the Flames.

“P.S. Enjoy your new arena, Calgary,” he wrote.

The Mammoth currently occupy the top wild-card position in the Western Conference. Should they get into the playoffs, they’ll have plenty of supporters in Calgary who will tune in to cheer on Weegar.
