Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy applications will open next week.

Trudeau said the federal government is launching a calculator on the Canada Revenue Agency website to help businesses calculate what they are covered for through the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy.

Applicants will be able to access the Subsidy starting on Monday, April 27, according to the prime minister.

“As a Canadian employer whose business has been affected by COVID-19, you may be eligible for a subsidy of 75% of employee wages for up to 12 weeks, retroactive from March 15, 2020, to June 6, 2020,” states the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy website.

“This wage subsidy will enable you to re-hire workers previously laid off as a result of COVID-19, help prevent further job losses, and better position you to resume normal operations following the crisis.”

The subsidy amount is based on the number and type of eligible employees you have, and the amount and type of pay they received before and during the crisis.

The maximum benefit is $847 per employee each week.

There is no limit on the total subsidy amount that an eligible employer may claim, according to the government.

During his daily briefing at Rideau Cottage on Tuesday, the prime minister also announced a $350 million emergency community fund for Canadian charities.

Trudeau said that it’s now been a number of weeks since the government has asked everyone to follow health experts’ advice, and the lockdown and social distancing “are an adjustment for most of us.”

For some, he said, the virus has had a worsening effect due to inequalities that already exist in society.

“The total number of people who need help to get through this difficult period has gone up,” said Trudeau, adding that charities have been there for communities since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trudeau said that community organizations are an essential resource for the most vulnerable.

“They need more support in order to help a large number of people,” he said, as he announced the $350 million fund to help community and non-profit organizations.

The funds will go to local organizations as well as national organizations like the United Way and the Red Cross.
