Alberta's tourism industry gets a coronavirus tax break
The Alberta government is giving businesses in the tourism industry a tax break to help them cope with the blow dealt by COVID-19.
Alberta hotels and lodging providers can delay paying the tourism levy until August 31, the government announced Friday. The break applies to levy amounts that become due on or after March 27, 2020.
A news release from the Ministry of Finance said the move should free up about $5 million in cash flow for employers. Businesses can use the money to retain staff and continue operating.
“We know Alberta’s tourism industry has been hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Minister of Finance Travis Toews said in a statement.
“We will continue to support Albertans and Alberta businesses during this tumultuous time, and will continue to evaluate and expand our efforts where possible.”
Alberta hotels are still required to collect the tourism levy from guests and to file returns. Payments deferred until August 31 will not be subject to penalties or interest, the Ministry of Finance says.
