Top events to check out at Beakerhead this weekend

Calgary’s smorgasbord of art, science and engineering launched earlier this week, but you’ve been stuck in the office. Now that the weekend is here, you can swap your work clothes for lab coats and check out the different Beakerhead events sprinkled around the city.

The Sky’s the Limit

View Calgary’s gorgeous skyline from the basket of a hot air balloon with free rides and an opportunity to make kites. If you’re feeling a little peckish post-flight, grab some grub from the various food vendors that will be on site.

Prepare yourself for an illuminating experience where art, science and engineering synchronize in perfect harmony. Authentic Chinese lanterns will cast their glow, highlighting the four seasons. You can also check out the illuminated creations from the girls in the Cybermentors program.

Taste of That Thing in the Desert

Calgarians will get a little taste of Nevada’s famous Burning Man festival so be prepared for some radical self-expression. It’s your opportunity to get interactive with workshops, live music and various art installations. Great for the young and not-so-young.

Rock ‘n Roll History of Space Exploration

Jay Ingram and the Cosmonauts will take you on a visual and musical journey through the explosive history of space exploration. Former host of Discovery Channel Canada’s Daily Planet, Jay Ingram, will show you how exploring the final frontier went from being science fiction to a reality.

Beakernight

You’re formally invited to Science’s largest urban street party! The illuminated streets of Bridgeland will be alive with performances, live music, installations and an art gallery. Cozy up to the Beakerbar for some cocktails and check out the funky attractions – including a pedal powered brain. Dress code: whatever you want!
