
Alberta could see some active weather today, with thunderstorms that could produce strong wind gusts and hail in certain areas.
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), thunderstorm outlooks from the Storm Prediction Centre state that despite an upper ridging in place bringing high temperatures to parts of the province, some thunderstorms may pop up today.
Heat warnings are currently in place for portions of southeastern Alberta, and those warnings may even be expanded to other parts of southern and central Alberta and perhaps to Edmonton in the coming days as the peak of the heat event is expected mid-week.
A few thunderstorms may be triggered along the Foothills today, which should be non-severe in nature, assuming they manage to materialize.
The outlook added that there’s a weak chance of nocturnal thunderstorms around Edmonton tonight, although forecasters are hard-pressed to find a trigger to cause that scenario at this time.
Another area of instability stretches across far northern Alberta, with a chance of strong wind gusts, according to the outlook for Monday, June 30.
The minor weather threat for portions of the province, which includes Edmonton, details primary hazards of hail up to three centimetres in size and wind gusts of up to 90 km/h.
