10 things to do in Calgary this week

Poppy Innovations

  • What: Create an attractive and edible planter arrangement that is great for those living in small apartments.
  • Where: South Health Campus – 4448 Front Street SE, Calgary
  • When: Tuesday, August 25 from 5 to 6 p.m.

  • What: This year’s 6th Global Fest will be showcasing Calgary’s cultural diversity and artistic excellence.
  • Where: Elliston Park – corner of 17th Avenue and 60th Street SE
  • When: Until Saturday, August 29
  • Cost: $7.50, finale tickets are $15 plus GST

The return of Drive-In movies at Deerfoot mall

  • What: Wednesday nights just got a little more fun thanks to the return of an old-school classic event, a Drive-In Movie series.
  • Where: Deerfoot Mall – 901 64 Ave NE, Calgary
  • When: Wednesday, August 26 at sunset
  • Cost: Free

St.Patrick’s Island: Outdoor Movie Series

  • What: Watch movies on the Rise in their 9-metre high natural amphitheatre. You are welcome to bring blankets but don’t bring chairs as it is on a slope. This weeks movie is Stand By Me.
  • Where: St. Patrick’s Island
  • When: Thursday, August 27 from 9 to 10:45 p.m.
  • Cost: Free

Music & Market Square

  • What: Every Thursday expect to see an event here. There are always fun things to do such as dance, meet new people and, of course, eat and drink.
  • Where: ContainR Park in Sunnyside
  • When: Thursday, August 27 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Cost: Pay what you can, proceeds go to the artists

Downtown Street Piano series

  • What: For four years, Downtown Calgary has commissioned outdoor street pianos to encourage people to play and listen to music. On Thursday, Kenna Burima (pop/rock) will play and on Tuesday, Steve Fletcher (jazz) will play.
  • Where: Woodlands piano – 3rd street and 6th Avenue SW
  • When: Every Tuesday and Thursday in August from noon to 1 p.m.
  • Cost: Free

Expo Latino 2015 Festival

  • What: Western Canada’s largest outdoor Latin festival will feature world class performances, exotic foods, shopping and dance. This festival has something for everyone.
  • Where: Prince’s Island Park
  • When: Friday, August 28 to Sunday August 30
  • Cost: Early Bird Adult Day Pass is $25, Weekend Pass is $35, Seniors/Youth Day Pass is $10

Market Collective

  • What: Celebrate Market Collective’s birthday by supporting local art and culture. One may purchase art, photography, accessories, jewelry, and more.
  • Where: East Village RiverWalk – 5th Street and Confluence Way SE,
  • When: Friday, August 28 from 4 to 9 p.m., Saturday, August 29 and Sunday, August 30 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Cost: Entire weekend is $5 and Kids are free

Calgary BMX Racing Track: Calgary Canada Cup & Provincial 7 & 8

  • What: Calgarians and international riders will be competing in hopes to qualify for the Calgary Rio Olympic games.
  • Where: BMX Racing Track – 5520 Blackfoot Trail SE, Calgary
  • When: Friday, August 28 to Sunday, August 30
  • Cost: Free

Disney’s The Lion King Calgary 2015 at Southern Jubilee Auditorium

  • What: Travel to the African savanna to marvel at the jumping gazelles, swooping birds, majestic lions and more in the Broadway musical. Listen to the unforgettable songs, like “The Circle of Life”, and the incredible vocalists and musicians producing them.
