6 can’t-miss events in Calgary this August

There’s something big coming to Calgary. Or should we say, Big Big?

If you’ve got the post-Stampede blues, we have just the thing to put some bounce back in your step. Introducing The Big Big Tent: east Victoria Park’s summer hot spot for movie nights, date nights and fun for the whole family, all for free in Calgary’s Culture & Entertainment District.

Whether you’re into shredding the gnar on some custom ramps, or just kicking back with a buddy and a bucket of popcorn, The Big Big Tent has a community event fit for everyone. Pick your favourite or mark your calendar for the whole series.

Movie nights

From the big screen to The Big Big Tent, grab your snacks and head over to enjoy a summer blockbuster — for free! All you have to do is BYOC (that is, bring your own chair) so you can sit responsibly.

The first movie screening on August 1 will be Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The second movie on August 29  will be determined by a fan vote. Sugar Creek Popcorn has your sweet (or salty) tooth covered.

Family Bike Day

Sticking around town for the long weekend? Big big or small small, round up your fam to enjoy a day of friendly competition, bonding and putting the pedal to the metal at the tent. Everyone’s welcome and Strider Bikes will be there looking out for the little guys with their STRIDER Adventure Zone, designed especially for young cyclists aged 18 months to 5 years!

Roller-Skate Party

Show off how you roll every Wednesday in August when The Big Big Tent will transform into Calgary’s biggest roller rink with the help of the fine folks at Calgary Roller Skate. Dust off your skates from home or rent ours for an evening of big, big fun.

When: August 7, 14, 21 & 28

Ninetimes Skateboard Park

Unleash your inner skater boi (or gurl) at the Big Big Tent, and drop in to experience some sick ramps provided by Market Collective. With partners from Ninetimes Skate Shop, Skate Life, 100% Skate Club and Academy Skateboard Collective, you’ll be rolling rain or shine on an acre of fresh asphalt.

CJSW Slurpee Cup Charity Street Hockey Tournament

Feeling hockey hungry? CJSW and the Big Big Tent have your off-season fix covered with their 21st annual Slurpee Cup Charity Street Hockey Tournament. It all goes down August 24, when teams face off in support of their charity of their choice!
