First of its kind community food centre set for Calgary

The Alex Community Food Centre (The Alex CFC), a new idea of food security, is going to be introduced to Calgary thanks to The Alex in partnership with Community Food Centres Canada.

Located in Forest Lawn, The Alex CFC, moves beyond emergency food provisioning by enriching skills, health, and creating connections in our community.

Goals of The Alex CFC aim to provide Calgarians with access to good food through drop-in meals, affordable markets, and community kitchens. Trained community chefs will prepare healthy meals, where the food is sourced from local farmers and producers whenever possible.

Everyone is welcome to come together at the centre to share recipes and knowledge, helping to gain confidence in growing, choosing and preparing healthy food.

The Alex CFC is the first Community Food Centre of its kind in Calgary, with others like it built east of us, according to Community Food Centres Canada. Need for such a centre is high as several neighbourhoods in Calgary have high rates of poverty, food insecurity, and social isolation with little access to supports or healthy food.

Currently, The Alex CFC is in the community engagement phase asking everyone to take a survey on “What do you want to see at The Alex CFC?” in the way of programs.

Keep up to date on what’s happening by following them on Facebook at The Alex Community Food Centre and/or Twitter at @goodfoodyyc.
