5 unexpected tacos at YYC Taco Fiesta 2016

Dec 19 2017, 11:24 am

With Poutine Week behind us, it’s time to get lost in all things tacos. YYC Taco Fiesta is running from April 29 through May 5, 2016, and features over 30 restaurants creating all kinds of taco combinations.

Most restaurants are offering individual tacos from $4 to $6, while others are offering taco platters ranging from $12 to 18. The best part of it all: 15% of taco sales goes to Kids Up Front, Calgary Homeless Foundation and Calgary Food Bank. During this taco-themed week, all you have to do is enjoy some delicious tacos for a good cause.

Among the many restaurants participating in the inaugural YYC Taco Fiesta, there are a few that aren’t known for their taco creations, however they’re throwing their hat into the ring.

1. Heaven Artisan Gluten Free Cuisine

Not everything needs gluten to be delicious and that’s what Heaven is delivering. This Venezuelan café is transforming their arepas into a taco starting with a soft corn tortilla with mechada beef, refried black beans, fried plantains, avocado slices and pico de gallo. No gluten, no problem!

2. The Mission

The newest restaurant on 4th Street SW serves a wide variety of Asian influenced bar snacks and their taco creation fits that theme perfectly. Marinated crispy tofu sits on a Sriracha crème fresh topped with some iceberg lettuce, sesames seeds, radish, and queso fresco all wrapped in a white corn tortilla.

Offering up new tasty items in their new brick and mortar location, Subs ‘n’ Bubbles is taking a break from serving Vietnamese subs to offer lemongrass beef (or chicken) topped with lettuce, cucumber, cilantro, and pickled carrots/daikon. All that gets covered with an avocado and mint sauce and tangy hot sauce.

Tubby Dog serving tacos? It’s not as crazy as you’d think since they serve tacos every Tuesday after 6:00 PM. However, every day this week they will be serving up a braised goat shoulder taco topped with onion, cilantro, queso fresco, lime, and radish.
