The Wild Rapids Water Park at Sylvan Lake is closing down, after the owners found they couldn’t afford to comply with new building regulations.
The beloved waterslide park near Red Deer has been open for 34 years, ever since founder Dave Dubeta had his dream to fill in the lake approved.
But this year, new building code, health and safety requirements meant the park was faced with having to complete major renovations and improvements.
In a release on the park’s website, operators Bear Development Corp. said the cost of the work – and the length of closure it would involve – made continuing untenable.
“We would like to thank everyone who supported this unique outdoor facility during the last 15 years,” said the release. “It has been a privilege for us to watch so many young people year after year visit and enjoy the Water Park.”
