Sunshine Village gondola to open Canada Day

Hikers and sightseers heading to Sunshine Village will be able to access some of Alberta’s best views when their 8-person gondola and the Standish high speed quad lift open on July 1.

The Rockies’ longest gondola ride opens up on Canada Day for the summer season and will be open for sightseeing each weekend, Friday through Sunday, and on all long weekends until Labor day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

As a treat on Canada Day weekend, a gondola ticket will not only get you up the mountain, but will take you up Standish Chair for incredible view of Mount Assiniboine, known to some as “the Matterhorn of the Canadian Rockies.”

A 15-minute drive from Banff itself, Sunshine Village sits 2,200 meters above sea level in the heart of Banff National Park. The 4.5 kilometre-long gondola ride will take you over two kilometres high and due to its high elevation, the mountain stays snowy all year, helped by enormous dumps of up to nine metres in-season.

Cross over to BC if you feel like going for a summer hike in Sunshine Meadows, the summery hike jam-packed with gorgeous wildflowers and excellent views of the Rockies in their full glory. It’s not hard to see why Lonely Planet ranks it the best day hike in Canada.

An adult ticket is $39 ($52 for the Standish ride), while tickets for children 6-15 are $21 ($28 for Standish). Children under five ride free.
