StatsCan is hiring tens of thousands of Canadians as it prepares to conduct a physically distanced census in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The country’s national statistical agency is currently hiring nearly 32,000 people as census enumerators and crew leader positions across Canada.

StatCan will conduct the next census in May 2021.

The census is used to paint “a portrait of Canada’s population and the places where we live,” says the agency. “Information from the census will ensure that your community has the data it needs for planning schools, daycare, housing, hospitals, emergency services, roads, public transportation, and employment skills training.”

StatsCan’s census collects demographics data on every Canadian citizen. The information is also used by governments, businesses, and organizations to make evidence-based decisions.

All equipment required to keep census employees safe during the pandemic will be provided by StatCan, and employees will work close to home, in their local communities. Census staff will identify dwellings on maps, follow up with respondents by phone and conduct physically-distanced in-person interviews when required.

Enumerators work part-time and have varied schedules, with most of the work being in the evening and on weekends. They are paid $17.83 per hour plus what StatsCan calls “eligible expenses.” In select Northern and remote communities, enumerators are paid $29.25 to $31.25 per hour.

Enumerators collect questionnaires from households, drop off letters inviting people to complete censuses, follow up with respondents, and ship completed questionnaires.

Crew leaders are paid $21.77 an hour and train, lead and supervise a team of up to 18 enumerators.

To be considered for a StatsCan job, applicants must be a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years old, have a Canadian home address, and a valid work permit.

The agency says the census will be physically distanced, all employees going door-to-door will be wearing face masks, and all the provincial health guidelines will be followed.
