As the new school year gets underway at St. Thomas High School in the West Island of Montreal, a new set of rules accompanies the new books, binders, and pencil cases.

NO. CELLPHONES.

An employee at the high school, located 25 kilometres outside of Montreal, confirmed with Daily Hive that letters were sent home to parents on the first day of the 2019 school year stating that “all cellphones must be turned off and stored in lockers upon entering St. Thomas High.”

The new rule bans students from using a cellphone throughout the day, including before and after classes, recess, and lunch time.

St. Thomas High School students are only allowed to use their phone once they have left the school’s property.

As schools across the country fumble with how cellphones fit into the lives of students, St. Thomas High School’s new phone policy appears to be among the strictest in the country.

The cellphone ban means no texting, calling, video chatting, social media, music, taking photos, or even wearing headphones until the school day has ended.

The school’s policy says that if the new rules aren’t respected, the device would be taken away from the student and further offences could result in suspension.

If the same student is caught using their cellphone on consecutive offences, the school says it would confiscate the device for the next three school days. The St. Thomas High School employee said no cellphones will be kept overnight as punishment, however.

How does that old “School’s Out” song go?

No more cellphones, no more books
No more teacher’s dirty looks…
