21 places to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Calgary

A day to celebrate green beer, fiddles, and paint shamrocks on your face. St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are infectious whether you’re Irish or not so we’ve rounded up events and places to celebrate the luck of the Irish this week around Calgary.

St. Patrick’s Day Mass

  • What: Attend Mass and then stay for a potluck style Feast of St. Patrick’s afterwards. The Calgary Irish Cultural Society is hosting the event and attendees of the lunch are asked to contribute to the meal with things like a tray of sandwiches or treats.
  • Where: St. Mary’s Cathedral – 219-18th Avenue SW
  • When: Thursday, March 17 at 11:30 a.m

St. Patrick’s Day fun at the market

  • What: Kids can make St. Paddy’s Day Rainbow Fruit Kabobs and guests can enjoy the Coshquin School of Irish Dance as they perform the main stage stage at 11 a.m.
  • Where: Calgary Farmer’s Market – 510-77th Avenue SE
  • When: Thursday, March 17 from 10 a.m to 1 p.m.

Jamesons Pub – traditional Irish breakfast

  • What: Enjoy a traditional Irish breakfast with potatoes, eggs, corned beef, and cabbage that will help you fill up before the drinking begins.

  • When: Thursday, March 17 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Wear green and save green at IHOP

  • What: Wear green to celebrate St. Patricks Day and get a short stack of buttermilk pancakes for just $1.

Irish cooking lessons at ATCO Blue Flame Kitchen

  • What: Wear something green while learning how to cook up an Irish-themed meal. Specialities that you’ll master are a beer vinaigrette, Guinness gravy, and an Irish pudding.

Fight of the Irish

  • What: Watch the Midget Wrestling Warriors battle it out in the Cowboys ring in the St. Patrick’s Day special. The early match starts at 4:30 p.m. and the second match at 8:30 p.m.
  • Where: Cowboys Dance Hall – 421-12th Avenue SE
  • When: Thursday, March 17 from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m.
  • Cost: $10 (Students get in free with valid ID before 10 p.m.)

Green beer and green fuels

  • What: Drink green beer while learning about how green biofuels are made. Cash bar and light refreshments available.
  • Where: TELUS Spark – 220 St. George’s Drive NE
  • When: Thursday, March 17 from 7 to 9 p.m.
  • Cost: $19.95 (free with membership)

Boondock Saints

  • What: Start off your night watching your favourite Irish movie. This is a one night only screening that is suitable for all ages.
  • Where: Plaza Theatre – 1133 Kensington Road NW

  • Cost: $10 (advance tickets) $15 (at the door)

St. Patrick’s Day continued

  • What: Listen to a band that has a sound inspired by Irish Folk music, but with its own identity. Fiddlers Green is one of Alberta’s busiest Celtic bands.

  • When: Friday, March 18 at 7 p.m.
  • Cost: No cover

St. Patrick’s Revel

  • What: A dinner party and show! Dancers from M.J.P. Academy of Irish Dance team up with the authentic Celtic musical performance of Fiddlers Green to create an Irish treat for the senses. Dinner will be served in the Wainwright Hotel featuring Irish inspired dishes such as the Guinness & Onion Soup.
