More snow is on the way for large sections of Alberta, with a multi-day chance of snowfall bringing up to 30 centimetres to the province.

After a snow-filled Family Day long weekend and a punch of cold air late last week, snow shovels across Alberta will once again be getting put to use as we near the end of the work week.

Looking at the Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) Significant Weather Outlook, a large portion of Alberta is at risk of seeing some snow starting on Thursday, Feb. 26.

A large swath of northern Alberta, including High Level and Fort McMurray, is set to see 10 to 15 centimetres of snow, while Edmonton and Calgary are under a risk area that is calling for two to five centimetres of snow, along with wind gusts in the 50 to 70 kilometre an hour range.

The heaviest snow on Thursday will be focused on the Foothills and the Rockies, with Jasper National Park right down to Banff National Park forecast to possibly see 10 to 20 centimetres of snow, with wind gusts in the 60 to 80 kilometre an hour range, too.

Areas stretching from Red Deer through Edson to Grande Prairie are also at risk of seeing five to 10 centimetres of snow, along with wind gusts in the 50 to 70 kilometre an hour range.

ECCC Significant Weather Outlook

A second round of snow is in the cards for Friday, Feb. 27, aiming at western and southern Alberta as we roll into the weekend.

According to the outlook, the Alberta Rockies and some of the Foothills will see the most snow, with an area just south of Jasper National Park right down to the U.S. border possibly seeing 15 to 30 centimetres of snow, and 30 to 50 km/h wind gusts. If you have plans to visit the Rockies this weekend, it’s shaping up to be a very snowy one!

A small section of southern Alberta, including the Lethbridge area, is also under a risk zone, which includes 15 to 25 centimetres of snow and wind gusts in the 70 to 90 kilometre an hour range.

The Calgary region could see 10 to 15 centimetres of snow, while Medicine Hat and southeastern portions of Alberta will see a lower amount of snow in the two to five centimetre range.
