Two Calgary grocery stores are undergoing major changes

Two Calgary grocery stores are about to undergo some major changes this year.

Last year, Safeway shared that its current locations at Northgate and Thorncliffe will be closing on March 2.

However, it’s good news for regular shoppers at those stores as both are set to be converted into FreshCo stores, which will open up this summer. The conversions come as part of Safeway’s plans to grow its discount network in Western Canada.

While the locations will be closed during the renovation phase, pharmacies at both locations will remain open during this time to avoid disruption to customers.

In details outlined on the Alberta Major Projects website, building permits have been issued by the City of Calgary this month for changes to the stores located at 399 36th St. NE and 5601 4th St. NW. The projects will cost $5 million each.

While these are the only developments announced for now, Safeway has said it is evaluating up to eight more Safeway conversions over the next few years.
