The top baby names picked by Canadian parents for the year have been released, and the latest Statistics Canada figures released on Sept. 24 show two familiar names maintaining their grip on the top spots for 2024.

Statistics Canada releases an annual list of the top baby names in the country, compiled each September using data from the Canadian Vital Statistics – Birth Database covering the previous calendar year.

For the 2024 list, Canadian parents leaned on some familiar favourites — so much so that both of the top baby names are unchanged from 2023, with one of the two names now having held the top position for nine consecutive years.

So, if you’re an expecting parent looking for a bit of inspiration, or perhaps want to steer clear of the most popular names, the top 20 male and female baby names in Canada of 2024 are a great place to kick off your search.

Popular boy names

Noah remained the most popular name for boys born in 2024, marking the fourth consecutive year the name has held the top position in StatCan’s reports.

A total of 2,115 babies in the country were named Noah last year, a slight decrease from the 2,162 the year before.

In fact, the top ten most popular boy names of 2024 remained essentially unchanged from the previous year, with Noah and Liam (1,694) ranking first and second, respectively, followed by Theodore (1,429), Leo (1,410), William (1,367), Oliver (1,244), and Lucas (1,183).

Popular girl names

Olivia was once again the most popular name for girls born in Canada last year, retaining this position for the ninth consecutive year.

The 1,639 babies named Olivia in 2024 were enough to keep that name in the top position. Still, aside from this continued preference among expecting parents, the rankings have undergone a broader shake-up.

Charlotte took over the #2 spot for most popular girl names in Canada with 1,528 babies given this name last year, bumping down 2023’s second-place name, Emma, which ranked in third last year with 1,358 babies given this name.

In fourth place, there were 1,123 babies given the name Amelia in 2024, and, rounding out the top five, 1,086 babies named Sophie.
