An electrified fence is going around a popular Alberta campground

A popular campground in the Alberta Rockies will look a bit different in the future, with a new fence being put up around the entire perimeter.
Parks Canada says the Whistlers Campground Exclusion Fence Project will involve the installation of ungulate-exclusion fencing around the perimeter of Whistlers Campground in Jasper National Park.
The project includes removal of conflict trees within the fence right-of-way, site preparation, installation of wooden post and page wire fencing, pedestrian gates, and cattle guards at vehicle access points. The fence is intended to reduce human-wildlife conflicts associated with elk use of the campground and support a safe camping experience for visitors.
On Sept. 9, Parks Canada also issued its Notice of Determination and determined that the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
The project will see the construction of approximately 5.3 kilometres of wildlife exclusion fencing around the campground, according to its solicitation document.
The work of the winning bid company on the project includes vehicle access gates, pedestrian and trail crossings, wildlife egress gates, stream and drainage crossings, grubbing and stumping, and fence installation across varied forested terrain adjacent to roads, utilities, campgrounds, and recreational facilities. The fence and vehicle crossing will be electrified. Specialized fence treatments will be required at watercourse crossings and wildlife management features.
“Proponents are required to achieve Substantial Performance of the Work by no later than March 31, 2027, including installation of posts, page wire fencing and gates. Proponents are required to achieve electrification by no later than May 15, 2027. Proponents shall achieve Final Completion, including electric fence installation, commissioning and testing, by no later than Oct. 30, 2027,” the document added.
