Alberta university names plesiosaur after Dr. Deena Hinshaw

Students at the University of Alberta have voted to name an ancient plesiosaur after the health officer that’s leading the province through the COVID-19 crisis.

The massive fossil cast hanging in the Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science will now be known as Dr. Deeno Hinshaw.

Indiana Bones was another close contender for the nine-metre long marine creature’s name. But that lost out to a name paying homage to Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw.

The plesiosaur originally lived in the Cretacious period. But these days it watches over people doing Starbucks runs below, according to a video statement from the Faculty of Science.

Other university faculties congratulated the gigantic reptile on its new name. The naming contest was organized by the U of A Palaeontological Society.
