In just over one year’s time, the Calgary Flames will be playing out of Scotia Place.
It’s been a lengthy process to get a new arena in Calgary, but it won’t be much longer until this new state-of-the-art building is ready for action.
Construction on Scotia Place began in July of 2024, with the goal of having it ready to go for the 2027-28 season. What started as nothing more than a hole in the ground is quickly progressing, with the outside of the building looking more complete by the day.

While the progress being made is clear just by looking at the outside of the building, the City of Calgary provided more updates on what’s been done as of late, including that steel has been installed for the community arena, which will also serve as the Flames’ practice facility. The steel structure has now been fully connected around the main bowl of Scotia Place.

While the video above displays the inside of the building and what it will look like upon completion, there is also footage provided by Offside that further shows just how far construction crews have come with the outside.

It isn’t just the side walls that are near completion, either. The official Instagram account for Scotia Place put out an update on Tuesday morning where they confirmed that the final layer of the roof is now in place on the west side, while structural steel installation has progressed across the northeast quadrant.
Perhaps the most exciting update yet is that the first concrete slab has been poured on the event level. This gives fans an opportunity to see where the corner of the ice will sit upon completion.

While there is still plenty of work to be done on the interior, it’s absolutely fascinating to see how quickly the outside has risen. And, despite not being built yet, hockey fans across Calgary are already seeing the rewards of having a new NHL arena.
Earlier in the year, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman confirmed that Calgary will be one of three host cities for the 2028 World Cup of Hockey. It’s the first of many major events the city is expected to host once the arena is ready to rock.
Though Scotia Place’s grand opening is getting closer and closer, Flames fans still have one more season ahead to enjoy the Saddledome. The iconic building, which opened in 1983, is set to be torn down within the next few years.
